In the late 1990s, at the dawn of the SUV gold rush, builders of station wagons sought to cash in with wagons dressed in outdoorsy garb – effectively a stopgap before proper SUVs could be developed. The all-wheel drive Subaru Legacy Outback, Volvo V70 Cross Country and Audi A6 Avant Allroad sat on jacked suspensions and knobbier tires, and perhaps bore a touch of plastic cladding on their lower bodies.
Volkswagen continues to find itself short of SUV products in the US market, so the company is applying a ‘90s formula to its Golf SportWagen, sliding in a Haldex all-wheel-drive system and other bits to produce the Golf SportWagen Alltrack. Considering the innate goodness and popularity of the latest-generation Golf and its various iterations, the Alltrack seems likely to be a hit, reading rather credibly as an Audi Allroad with a $10,000 discount.
