This week, Mary Cotter celebrated
turning 103 by dressing up as her favourite superhero and volunteering
at the Montclair Senior Center, something she’s been doing for 25 years.
She’s a real-life Wonder Woman. And now she’s got the T-shirt to prove it.
Mary’s special birthday suit was a gift
from her friends at the center, where she’s been serving up coffee, tea
and water as a volunteer for over two decades.
‘They call me the barmaid because I’m serving drinks,’ she told ABC7 News.
The energetic centenarian still lives alone and drives to and from the center five days a week – whatever the weather.
Asked to share her secret to long life and good health, Mary says: ‘Just keep busy I guess.’
True to her word, Mary has lived a very
full life. In the 1930s, she helped her high school win the state swim
championship. In her 60s, she taught swimming to children. And she
helped rescue sea turtles well into her 90s.
The video of Mary’s birthday
celebrations has had over 264,000 views after it was posted on the ABC
News channel’s Facebook page earlier this week.
‘Proof that real super heroes walk among
us,’ writes one woman underneath, while colleague Lupe Navarrete adds:
‘I love this lady!! I work with Mary at the volunteer center. She has
more energy than most of us younger folks!! Always smiling and hugs us
when we walk in! Super woman she is!! Happy 103 Birthday Mary Cotter,
love your friend.’
As for Mary herself, she was largely
unfazed by all the attention. ‘I don’t know, just another day went by,’
she said of her moment in the spotlight
