Let me commend ex President Goodluck Jonathan for causing to be established antigay legislation in Nigeria.
Few days back, a joint session of the US
Senate and House Committees on Foreign Affairs (on the seeming prodding
of President Obama) cornered President Buhari to have a “rethink” of
gay rights, gay movement and same sex marriage in Nigeria.
Curiously, this proposal came after US
unequivocally maintained their unaltering support to lift Nigeria from
its present economic declivity and corruption-ridden throes.
It was a proposal aimed at posterizing
our core values, belief systems and heterogeneity as one indivisible
nation. It was a proposal aimed at harkening to the needless cri de cœur
of US-based Nigerian LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
Transgender/Transsexual and Intersexed) community.
It was also a proposal aimed at using Nigeria as a guinea pig experiment in Africa!
Lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered fellows are human beings. No doubt. I have no qualms with helping, hugging, shaking hands, working and having fruitful interactions with them.

I’ve always maintained that these
individuals are extremely creative (especially in the fashion, beauty
and related industries). They are honest. Committed. Focused. Smart. And
nice. But let’s face reality. Most of us would agree that Nigeria, a
largely heterosexual society can’t be a hotbed for an LGBTI community.
So when President Buhari outrightly and
emphatically rejected the proposal in its entirety, he won my heart and
that of several millions Nigerians home and abroad.
I don’t know about you. But this
rejection is historic. And I hope it would be maintained (by successive
governments) ad infinitum.
Again, kudos to Goodluck for establishing antigay laws in 2014.
Ok, enough ranting!
