Four Igbo
students including a girl and three Igbo boys have made the headlines
for all the right reasons after they emerged best graduating students
out of 226 students at the Dillard University, New Orleans, in the
U.S.A.
The country’s First Lady, Michelle
Obama, last May, graced the graduation ceremony with her presence at the
University Auditorium and gave a speech where she commended the four
gbo students.
Among the four students was a 20-year-old Merrilyn Akpapuna, now 21, who hals from the Igbo speaking part of Delta State.
Named the Valedictorian, which implied
that she was the overall best, she sat on the same podium as Mrs Obama
at during the convocation.
She scaled through the institution with the highest distinction, Summa Cum Laude, in Psychology with a project research topic on sexual harassment.
The three other Igbo students who were
named Salutatorians, which meant that they were in second position,
include one Victor Ogburie from Abia State, who studied Computer Science
Major with minors in Physics and Mathematics; Stephen Ogidi Igwe who
also hails from Abia State studied Biology Major and Emole Anya Dimgba,
also from Abia State, who studied Computer Science Major with minors in
Physics and Mathematics.
They were all recipients of different awards at the valedictory service.
In her speech, Michelle Obama described
the Igbo students as a “sea of young geniuses”, adding that they had
opportunities and skills that their parents and grandparents never could
have imagined.
